The Muskegon County Museum offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities that are sure to
meet the needs of everyone. Volunteers at our various locations make up our volunteer team.
Individualized training and supervision are provided for all volunteers by staff. Volunteering
at the Museum is not only fun, but also rewarding. With volunteers we are able to serve thousands
of school children and the general public each year. Just look over our offerings, make your

Currently, the museum has a special need for volunteers at the Fire Barn Museum
and the Scolnik House - a Historic House of the Depression Era.
Fire Barn Museum and Scolnik House volunteers are not required to climb stairs.
Research & Collections
Volunteers are needed to assist in the research of artifacts and cataloging of archival materials
that include, newspaper clippings, books, photographs and diaries. The time commitment is very flexible.
Education (Programs & Tours)
Docents (tour guides) in the Education Department lead tours and teach classes of scheduled school groups.
The topics include science and history such as Lumbering, Pioneer Living and Nature's Food Webs. Time
requirement is based upon the volunteer's schedule and training is provided on an individual basis.
The Museum offers a great Summer Day Camp for children 6-11 years old. This two-week camp is a great
opportunity for youth volunteers 16 years and older.
Hackley & Hume Historic Site, Fire Barn Museum, and Scolnik House - a
Historic House of the Depression Era
The Historic Sites need volunteers to assist with public
and school tours. Training is required and provided for all tour guides at the Site. The Sites
offer
tours to groups April - December. The general public may visit the Sites during our Open House hours
May - October and then again during the holiday season. The Historic Sites are always
looking for people to assist with research too. Volunteers are asked to commit at least 20 hours annually.
Muskegon Mercantile
The Museum Store is a bustling retail operation using volunteers to assist as cashiers, with inventory
control, customer service and having a great time! Unique Muskegon gifts and books on Muskegon history
are a specialty for the Mercantile. The Museum Store is located inside the
Muskegon County Museum building and is open Monday through
Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m. and on weekends from 12:30 to 4:30.
Special Events
Volunteers are needed to assist with special events such as exhibit openings and receptions. Volunteers
will find themselves assisting with invitation mailings, refreshment preparation, decorating and greeting guests.
