CULTURAL HISTORY LOAN KITS

Israel and Jewish Americans


Today’s world crosses international and cultural boundaries. Students will be introduced to the history and conflict of Israel. Students will relate the Jewish-American journey to their community through first hand accounts and artifacts.

Herstory

The lives and expectations of women have changed dramatically over time. Explore these changes using artifacts including a shoe, corset, aprons, and gloves. View books and photographs of women throughout history.

Victorian Life

Explore turn of the century Michigan through a stereoscope, classroom reader, and a chamber pot. Students will explore the changing lifestyle by viewing photographs and books from and about this period.

Michigan Indians

What was Indian life in Michigan like hundreds of years ago? Students will learn about Michigan Indian culture by touching stone tools and crafts. Study animal pelts and metal items to understand the cultural impact of the fur trade.

Lumbering

Discover the importance of the lumbering era in the development of Muskegon County by utilizing lumbering tools, viewing pictures from the lumbering era, and touching a 100 year old log end.
Michigan Settlers

Learn what life was like for the brave people who settled Michigan through wool cards, quilt square, candle molds, and pioneer games.  Students can use artifacts, videos, posters, and music to experience life as a Michigan settler.
Michigan in the Civil War

Students will have the opportunity to try on a Civil War uniform, go through a haversack and a housewife, learn about slavery and the Underground Railroad and meet Michigan Civil War soldiers with the hands-on loan kit.

The 1960s in Michigan

Use hands-on artifacts to teach your students about war, culture and politics in the 1960’s and how they affected this community.  Use the oral history DVD’s to see how race relations and the Vietnam War touched people right here in Muskegon County.  This is a beneficial tool to discuss a volatile era in America’s history.
